How to Create the Ultimate Life List with “Be, Do and Have”
Have you ever stopped to work out what you really want and why? Well, there is potentially no better time than a new year to do just that and, a great way to both define an ultimate goal list and work out a strategy to achieve those goals is by using three simple words: Be, Do and Have.
(As an aside, any day, not just January 1st, provides an excellent opportunity to set some great goals)
So, it’s the New Year and many of us will have set traditional New Year’s resolutions, typically around our health and wellbeing, our relationships, our finances, and so on, however only about a quarter of us will actually see them through to the end of the year. Why is this? The reasons (or sometimes excuses!) are many, but I believe these to be the main ones:
Our limiting beliefs are getting in the way
We have failed at keeping resolutions in the past and believe we will again
We are not operating from the vibration of someone who already has what we want - we are not being who we need to be today
We don't hold ourselves accountable or work with someone who can
Resolutions are often negative, self-deprecating and uninspiring
We haven't explored the benefits of NOT keeping the resolution
So, what should you do instead? Be, Do, Have of course! Follow the two-stage process outlined below.
The First Stage – Complete the Be, Do, Have (Why) Grid
Step 1
List all the things that you want to BE, DO or HAVE using the grid above – take a few days to do this if you like
Keep the grid in your notebook or journal and return to it over time
Feel inspired, think back to early dreams and bucket list items
Make this list exhaustive - think of absolutely everything!
Step 2
Write a brief sentence about why you want to Be, Do, or Have each item on your list
If you can’t answer this with any of them, cross them off your list
Step 3
Decide the most important areas of your life and consider your core values for example…
Family
Friends
Career/Work
Finances
Health & Vitality
Emotional well-being
Social life
Fun & recreation
Physical environment (where and how you are living and your surroundings)
Spirituality
Step 4
Take each of your goals in turn and ask the question: Will having, being, or doing this thing improve the areas of my life that I deem are important? Is it aligned to my core value/s?
Give one mark for each “yes” answer
Step 5
For each of your goals, ask if it is right and fair to everyone who is in your sphere of influence and concern and if it will take you closer to your overall objective. I.e. is it ecological and congruent
Step 6
Order your goals in priority order – your most important and urgent to your least
You now have a list of goals! Next…
The Second Stage
Ask yourself:
What do I want to HAVE?
(This is your list of goals from stage one of the exercise)
Who do I need to BE? (In order to achieve my goals)
This is the key part. Visualise yourself in the future achieving your goals – what are you feeling, thinking, doing? Hold that onto the vision. Then…
Who do you need to be today to be the kind of person who achieves that goal?
How do you need to act?
Who do you need to surround yourself with?
What decisions would you make?
What do I need to DO?
This is where you set actions for yourself:
When specifically are you going to do it? How?
What might get in your way?
Construct an action plan
So, there you have a two-stage process using just three simple words: Be, Do and Have to help you to define a list of inspiring and aligned goals, and then a model for achieving them. Good luck with creating your ultimate life list and, above all, enjoy the process!
